The Curious Phenomenon of Movember

Movember, a combination word made from moustache and November, is an annual, month-long event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other male cancer and associated charities.

The Movember Foundation

Now, that isn't what makes Movember interesting. What makes Movember interesting is the viralness of the awareness campaign. Here in Calgary Canada, everybody knows about Movember and every male physically capable or growing a moustache is doing so in support of Movember. The sheer speed that this campaign is spreading is incredible, since beginning in Oceania in 2004, Movember stayed in Australia for about 3 years, and really started their worldwide awareness campaign in 2007. This movement already took hold in Canada and is taking hold in both Europe and the USA right now.

Before the existence of Movember, male cancers like prostate and testicular cancer went virtually unknown amongst the general public. Like other obscure cancers like mouth, ovarian and bladder, male cancers were nonexistent in people's minds. Now, Everyone knows what prostate cancer is and everyone is raising money for that cause.

The Movember Foundation and Prostate Cancer Canada isn't the only ones benefiting from this new event, local companies are also taking a share out of the Movember craze that is sweeping Canada.

One of the notable companies that is using this craze for both profit and charity is Urban Mugs Inc here in Calgary. ( http://www.facebook.com/UrbanMugs ). They are a student run and operated company under Junior Achievement Southern Alberta, a non profit organization that supports student entrepreneurship and leadership.

This company sells moustache mugs called the Mugstache, and they donate 50% of their profit to prostate cancer research in the spirit of Movember and moustaches.

Now, there are many many companies like this one, and I chose it because it actually donates to charity and it is a student run corporation.

Overall, I would expect many more events like Movember just due to the sheer popularity of it in the near future. Thanks for reading :)
